  • What is Form 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement)?
We are required by IRS Section 1.65050S-1 to send Form 1098-T to students who enrolled in courses during the 2007 calendar year and who had qualified tuition and/or fees billed during 2007.  The form is used to assist the IRS and students in determining if students are qualified for education-related tax benefits.

  • Will I receive a 1098-T form this year?
If you were enrolled in courses during the 2007 calendar year and had qualified tuition and/or fees billed during 2007, you should receive a 1098T form.

  • When will I receive my 1098T form?
We mail our 1098T forms to students during the third week of January.  The information on Form 1098-T was prepared by Kaplan Higher Education using the financial information and address as it appears in your school’s student information system.  If you have moved in the past year, please verify your address with your college’s business office.

  • If I receive Form 1098-T, does that mean that I qualify for the Hope Scholarship, Lifetime Learning Credits or other tax benefits?
Not necessarily.  Kaplan Higher Education is required to provide Form 1098-T to individuals who were billed for qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year 2007.

  • How do I determine which expenses will qualify for the Hope Scholarship, Lifetime Learning Credits, or other tax benefits?
We cannot legally provide tax advice concerning how to use your form when you are filing your tax return.  Please consult with the IRS or a qualified tax preparer if you have questions concerning how to use this form on your taxes.

  • If I am a nonresident alien, will I receive a Form 1098-T?
A nonresident alien should not receive Form 1098-T since a nonresident alien is generally not eligible to claim either the Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Credit.  Certain nonresident aliens who are married to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens and who qualify to file a joint-income tax return, may, in some cases qualify to claim the credits.

  • What do the amounts located on the form represent?
    • Box 2 represents the amount of qualified billed tuition at the college you attended for calendar dates January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007.
    • Box 8 is only checked if you have been a half-time student (6 credit hours) for at least one academic period that began during the calendar year of 2007.

  • Why does the 1098-T form show billed amounts instead of payments?
The IRS requires Kaplan Higher Education to choose one reporting method--either amount billed or amount paid.  We chose to report the “amount billed” method.  We report with this method every year.

  • What did I pay for tuition in calendar year 2007?
